Fox laced a double to left-center field to lead off the fourth inning." |

Mt. Carmel High softball coach Tom Peronto hopes history
will repeat itself Tuesday when the Sundevils, who scored a 15-inning
upset of No. 3 seed Torrey Pines in Wednesday's regular-season finale,
visit the Falcons in the CIF Division I quarterfinals.
The Sundevils will get the opportunity to make that
happen after Vanessa Soto and Kristie Fox both homered Saturday to pace a
15-2 first-round victory over visiting Vista.... |

5/23/02
CIF Semifinal
Mt Carmel 1 vs. LCC 2 |
| This victory by the Mavericks was not an
easy one. Outhit by a 9-3 margin, La Costa Canyon got the one hit it
needed in the third inning.
Trailing 1-0 on a first-inning run, La Costa Canyon
shortstop Brandy Bucher got the hit-and-run sign, but instead slammed the
second pitch she got over the left fielder's head for her first home run
this season.
The shot also drove in Staci Falzon, who had laced a
two-out single to left just before the game's big blow. "I was
just trying to hit it hard on the ground somewhere,'' said Bucher, a
sophomore who was promoted to the varsity for last year's postseason but
sat on the bench instead. "I looked at it when I hit it and it
kept carrying. It felt really good off the bat. I play a lot of games
between LCC and travel ball, but I can't even remember the last home run I
hit.''
La Costa Canyon got just one walk off Mt. Carmel junior
hurler Laura Wiens, who walked one and struck out eight in falling
to 14-10.
To say Mt. Carmel (19-10-1) had its scoring chances
would be an understatement. Despite having runners in scoring position in
six of the game's seven innings, the Sundevils stranded 10 runners against
right-hander Katie Maroney, who improved to 24-4 despite battling a case
of the flu. "We just couldn't get the key hit when we needed
it,'' said Mt. Carmel coach Tom Peronto. "They got it and we didn't. Well,
they got the one key hit they needed.''
After the Mavericks took the lead, the Sundevils left
the bases loaded in the fourth, stranded two runners in the fifth, left a
runner at second in the sixth and, as if to tease the Mt. Carmel fans one
last time, stranded runners at first and second in the seventh.
Mt. Carmel put together a two-out rally for its only run
in the first when Katie Vickers, who was 2-for-2, doubled in
Vanessa Soto, who had singled.
"This was one of those games where you wonder how are we
doing this,'' said Mavericks coach Mike Hill. "Our defense is a hallmark
of our teams every year and it showed in this one.
"Getting to the finals is what we expect. We get to
finals because we expect to be here. And we expect to win, nothing less.''
While Bucher was 2-for-3 for the Mavericks, the
Sundevils got two-hit games from Erin Floros (2-for-3) and
Kristie Fox (2-for-4).
